Winter in the Desert

As many know, the desert becomes very cold in the months of Oct. to Mar. Many of us tend to lean towards using space heaters to conserve energy. Many of these space heaters including those of oil filled radiators are plugged into an electric power source, most commonly a main outlet. The power ratings of appliances are measured in kW, which allows an easy estimation of operation cost per hour, as energy is billed in kWh.

Yes space heaters are convenient and create low costs, but they come with many safety issues. The two primary health risks from heaters are the risk of fire and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The latter risk accompanies gas and kerosene heaters but not electric ones. The risk of fire from electric heaters may be mitigated by low surface temperatures (as found on oil-filled convective heaters), or by switches that cut power in the event of the device being knocked over (often found in the bases of halogen heaters), or by thermal cut-out switches.

In the end, we need to be careful of the space heaters that we use and make sure that you have carbon monoxide detectors, or have the already existing ones checked.
